Ice Sculpture
Christmas
First of all, this movie intrigued me from the get-go simply
because of the unique angle. There was a point of focus that didn’t involve
shaming a woman for having a career or for not having a joyful enough Christmas
spirit. Secondly, I truly enjoyed this movie, and not just because it was brand
spankin’ new for 2015, which is always a plus since ‘shiny and new’ are always
appealing in the TV movie department. Ice Sculpture Christmas stars the adorable
Rachel Boston as the bubbly and oh-so-kind Callie Shaw. It also stars Brenda
Strong as the head chef (Gloria) of the kitchen for which Callie recently
became the new dishwasher even though she recently completed culinary school.
Anna is instantly appealing since she is the polar opposite of the typical “too
big for her britches” freshly-out-of-school ingénue we are used to encountering
as we witness a young woman striving toward achieving her dreams. Anna is
talented in the area of ice sculpting, which according to this movie is a
common attribute for chefs. Who knew? There is of course an ice sculpting
contest looming, which incidentally her boss has entered, so what’s a girl to
do? I’ll tell you what. She will meet (or re-meet, I should say) the hotel
owner’s son, David, played by David Alpay, who is insta-charmed by her and her
ice carving prowess, and is secretly signed up for the by him unbeknownst to
her! What the what??? This causes fast problems between them even though they
aren’t even a couple yet. Luckily, after a little support from her widowed
father, who works at the hotel and has for years, she forgives David and they
become fast more-than-friends/ice sculpting partners. Meanwhile, back at the
hotel, Callie’s daddy and Chef Gloria are becoming quite cozy making naughty
fake bets about who will win the contest, which will either way, regardless of
the outcome, result in her cooking him dinner… mmm hmm. Oh!! I almost forgot!
There is a nasty saboteur in the kitchen who has it IN for Callie and is
clawing her way to the top of the career ladder through her scheming antics. I
will save the ending for your eyes only, but I do have to say that there were
tears… and they were legitimate. Who knew that a Christmas themed contest could
elicit that much of an emotional impact? Yea, Hallmark! You have warmed my
heart with a gigantic piece of ice.
